What is Fiber?

Nutritional fiber refers that fit to be eaten parts of plants or carbohydrates that cannot be digested. Fiber is in all plant foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds. There are two main types of fiber,
·         Soluble
·         Insoluble
Soluble dissolves in water, while insoluble doesn't. Fiber cannot be digested. However, soluble fiber is transformed as it passes through the digestive tract; soluble fiber absorbs water, and becomes gelatinous as it does so. Insoluble fiber passes through the gut without changing its form.

Most plant foods contain some of each kind of fiber. Foods containing high levels of soluble fiber include dried beans, oats, oat bran, rice bran, barley, citrus fruits, apples, strawberries, peas, and potatoes. Foods high in insoluble fiber include wheat bran, whole grains, cereals, seeds, and the skins of many fruits and vegetables.
